Why Windows Updates Matter More Than You Think
Windows Update notifications are easy to dismiss. They appear at inconvenient times, they require restarts, and the update descriptions are rarely informative. Most people delay them or turn them off entirely. This is a significant security mistake.
What Windows Updates Actually Contain
Windows updates contain several types of changes. Feature updates add new functionality and change the interface. Quality updates fix bugs and performance issues. Security updates patch vulnerabilities — flaws in Windows code that attackers can exploit to run malicious code, escalate privileges, or access data they should not be able to reach.
Security updates are the critical ones. When Microsoft releases a security patch, it is because a vulnerability has been discovered — often because it is already being exploited in the wild. The patch closes the door. An unpatched system leaves it open.
How Attackers Exploit Unpatched Systems
When a security vulnerability is publicly disclosed, attackers immediately begin scanning for unpatched systems. The window between a patch being released and attackers exploiting the vulnerability it addresses is often measured in days, not weeks.
The WannaCry ransomware attack in 2017 is the most famous example. It exploited a Windows vulnerability called EternalBlue. Microsoft had released a patch two months before the attack. Organizations that had applied the patch were protected. Those that had not were devastated — hundreds of thousands of computers in 150 countries were encrypted.
Automatic Updates: Enable Them
The simplest and most effective thing you can do is enable automatic updates. Go to Settings → Windows Update → Advanced Options and ensure "Receive updates for other Microsoft products" is enabled in addition to Windows itself.
If you are concerned about updates breaking things, you can configure Windows to download updates automatically but ask before installing them. This gives you control over timing while ensuring you are not running unpatched software indefinitely.
Third-Party Software Updates Matter Too
Windows updates only patch Windows and Microsoft software. Your browser, PDF reader, media players, and other third-party applications also receive security patches. Keep them updated too. Many applications have built-in auto-update features — enable them.
End-of-Life Windows Versions
Windows versions that have reached end of life no longer receive security updates. Windows 7 reached end of life in January 2020. Windows 8.1 reached end of life in January 2023. If you are running either of these, you are running an operating system with known, unpatched vulnerabilities that will never be fixed. Upgrading to Windows 10 or 11 is the only real solution.
